The Assumption is the first short film in Sicily Folk Doc, the project in a series of documentaries dedicated to Sicilian folk festivals.
At the centre are the communities that dedicate months of preparatory work to these events, finding the full expression of their collective identity in the festivities. Spectacular, little-known traditions that survive precariously, often attacked by public order with respect to their ‘dangerousness’ or by an alleged religious maturity in contrast with the explosive and carnal spirit of many of them.
The Assumption is set in the village of Randazzo; the documentary won a Special Mention at the French festival of Clermont-Ferrand Traces de Vie 2015, a Special Mention at I LOVE GAI 2016 (Venice 2016), the Special Prize ‘Appacuvi’ at Cerano Film Festival 2015, a Special Mention at Concorto, short film section of Marzamemi Frontier Film Festival 2015, the Best Director Prize at Corti di Sabbia 2015, the Special Prize ‘Giovannello da Itala’ at Corto di Sera 2015.
